As for the other two CDs, the “discovery” artists (and they both happen to be French), I bought 30 by known resident Hacienda DJ (at least before The Hacienda closed down), Laurent Garnier and Music Kills Me by « rinôçerôse ».
Laurent Garnier is considered part of the “Madchester” rave movement of the late 80’s by some music mags (I’ve also seen his work described as “Techno” and “House” on some others). To boot, I am not a “Techno” fan at all. But to hell with the genre definitions a lot of us give to music these days—for I am too guilty… But upon a quick listen, I noticed that the album is not all “Techno” or “Rave” at all, but an interesting blend of different electronic styles, (here I go again with the genre thing ;)) for example Electro to Trip-Hop, and Garage to Deep House.
As for the other electronic group, « rinôçerôse », all I can say is that their album too utilises a very interesting blend of different styles. There are a lot of guitars, and a track or two with a loungy Bossa Nova feel…
For the last few weeks, I have been re-revisiting my Siouxsie roots, and reheard Dazzle (from their Hyaena album). That track brings back a lot of memories, and for the moment, I can’t stop listening to it (I know, bad me ;)).
What I love about music is the fact that when you really like an artist or track, you can listen to it seemingly infinitely. Later, you may get a bit tired and stop listening to it for a long while, but when you return to it, it is as if you were hearing it for the first time. You appreciate it more, feel it differently, hear slight nuances in the instrumentation (that you think you never heard before), and reinterpret the lyrics in a different light. More importantly, you return to the feelings the track gave you when you first heard it. That is truly what art can do to a person…
