Today, I was working diligently on some projects at work today, listening to an archived Janice Long radio show on BBC featuring Moz (Oh… that’s Morrissey’s nick for those who don’t know). The pics on the BBC Web site show the 43 year old looking much older (hints of gray) and more distinguised (than I remember him) these days. His life in California hasn’t been unkind to him at all… Believe it or not, it’s the first time I’ve actually heard his soft Mancunian speaking voice. It’s one thing to hear it in song, and another to actually hear it spoken…
One thing Morrissey talked about in the radio interview, was the current state of record companies, the music industry, and how horrid it has become. It’s all about the money, and that’s why good music and talent is hard to find these days. In that, I really have to agree with him (having done some side projects with music myself).
He also played a few songs during the radio show… his more recent work hasn’t called out to me much, having more favouritism with the old sound of The Smiths days. I admit I also like some of his work from his early solo days, but time has not been so kind to my attention span. My interest has waned a bit over the years, but there still quite a bit of nostalgia. I do still listen to the old sound—including the early solo years because it is still the same quality music that we first thought it was upon hearing it for the first time. But, every once in a while, in the midst of a nostalgic moment, one can’t help but wonder what is currently happening with an old favourite… so…
Janice Long, at one point, mistakenly mentions (and then quickly corrects herself) that morrissey-solo.com is Morrissey’s site. He says it’s not his site, but I imagine that if he needed an official one, that particular one should be it. I’ve have actually visited that site in the past (it is a great one), and it has a wealth of information about Morrissey (you can definitely find info on The Smiths as well). Personally, I’m not much about fandoms of any sort, so I try to veer away from that. But I certainly can appreciate a wide variety of things in gleaning information and doing research (especially with the wealth of info that exists on the Internet). I learn some interesting, sometimes random knowledge from innate curiosity about things, places, events, and people.
But I admit that it was pleasant to catch up a bit with an artist I have not heard about in a long time…
Thus spoke…
