I happened to be researching some Japanese reference (I can’t recall what it was exactly), which then led me to Jean Snow’s posting who mentioned a book based on a supposed true account that came from a posting on the Japanese popular bulletin called 2ちゃんねる (2 Channel). Along with the book, it was also made into a tv drama and a movie which made it a pretty popular talked about story in Japan.
My interest was piqued enough that I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I was able to see the tv drama for myself and I really liked it. I haven’t laughed so much in a very long time. Of course you do get to learn quite a bit about Japanese culture. I had taken Japanese in high school for two years about 18 years ago with the plan to move over there, learn the language fluently well and go to university (with the rest on a “let’s see” basis). Of course things turned out quite different for me (I ended up going to Belgium instead), which I don’t regret at all. My only regret is not having continued to learn the language well and pocket a third language apart from English.
Who knows, I may decide to start taking Japanese again. I forgot a lot, but I should have no difficulty in catching up again.
